Six brand-new vehicles were stolen from a Rosetown car dealership this week, the RCMP said, but four have been recovered thanks to efforts of a number of police forces.
According to the RCMP, the six vehicles were taken early Tuesday morning and the thieves left behind a van that had been reported stolen in Alberta earlier in the day. Shortly afterward, police got a report of a group of suspicious vehicles travelling together on a grid road at high speed.
Police found two of the stolen vehicles abandoned near Rosetown, and another was found abandoned near Luseland. That left three still missing.
With help from the Luseland Police Service, officers stopped another of the stolen vehicles nearby. The two people inside ran from the traffic stop, the RCMP said, but they were quickly found and arrested.
In that vehicle, officers found two illegally modified firearms, ammunition and a box full of vehicle keys.
The suspects, a 36-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman, were charged with breaking and entering and committing an indictable offence.
Officers determined some of the missing vehicles may have been taken to Alberta, and one of them was later recovered by the Red Deer RCMP.
Two vehicles are still missing, police said. They are a grey 2019 Ford 350 with Saskatchewan licence plate 287 LLV and a black 2022 Jeep Wrangler that had no plate when it was last seen.
Anyone who spots the stolen vehicles should not approach them, the RCMP said, and should instead contact police or Crime Stoppers.
According to the RCMP, the investigation involved officers from six Saskatchewan RCMP detachments as well as the Roving Traffic Unit, Alberta RCMP, and Luseland Police Service.
“We’d like to thank members of the public who reported information about suspicious vehicles in their area — it helped the investigation,” Rosetown RCMP Sgt. Jason Waldner said in a statement. “This was an investigation that stretched across Saskatchewan and Alberta.”
