Oscar-nominated actor James Caan has died at age 82.
Caan’s representatives announced his passing Thursday in a post to his official Twitter account.
“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6,” the post read.
His family said they appreciate “the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences” they have received, and asked for privacy as they grieve the loss.
A native of New York City, Caan rose to prominence in 1972 with his role as Sonny Corleone in ‘The Godfather,’ opposite Marlon Brando and Al Pacino. The role earned Caan an Oscar nomination.
He later starred in films such as ‘Brian’s Song,’ ‘Misery,’ and ‘A Bridge Too Far.’
Married four times, he leaves behind five children including actor Scott Caan, star of ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ and ‘Hawaii Five-0.’
