Two people were arrested Sunday after a standoff with the Regina Police Service’s SWAT team near the North West Leisure Centre.
Just before 11 a.m., police were sent to the 1100 block of North Blanchfield Street, just off Rochdale Boulevard. Officers learned a man and a woman who had asked for a ride from a ride-sharing service showed their driver a gun, claiming they were trying to sell it.
Eventually, the gun was pointed at the driver before the couple got out of the vehicle without paying and went into a nearby home.
Around 4:20 p.m., the SWAT team arrived and, five minutes later, the woman left the residence and was arrested. At around 6:35 p.m., the man was taken into custody.
Police determined the suspect had multiple outstanding warrants from Regina and Fort Qu’Appelle and was on release orders to keep the peace. Officers searched him and found ammunition — a breach of a prior court order — and a subsequent search of the residence found a gun.
A 27-year-old man from the Pasqua First Nation and a 30-year-old woman from Regina were charged. They made their first court appearances Monday morning.
