The world’s largest T. rex is getting some company.
The T. rex Discovery Centre in Eastend is set to unveil a new Tylosaur exhibit. It’s the latest attraction at the centre, which already boasts the giant T. rex Scotty, a Paleo Lab Experience and other discoveries by Royal Saskatchewan Museum paleontologists.
Tylosaurs are a species of mosasaur, a predatory marine reptile that lived 72 million years ago during the late Cretaceous era in a large inland sea that covered most of Saskatchewan at that time.
The centre’s specimen is about 10 metres in length and was discovered in the hills around Lake Diefenbaker.
The centre has some other activities on the agenda this summer, including a great horned owl presentation on Aug. 13, Scotty’s Unearthed Day on Aug. 16 (the 31st anniversary of the day it was unearthed), Storytime with Scotty’s Friends on Saturdays from 2:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., and theme weeks (when employees do a show-and-tell with various fossils and discuss prehistoric animals).
The T. rex Discovery Centre is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until Labour Day. It’s a 90-minute drive from Swift Current and an hour’s drive from Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park.
Admission is by donation.
