A warrant has been issued for a man who didn’t show up for his trial on charges of uttering threats toward Premier Scott Moe and Saskatchewan’s chief medical health officer.
Tobechi Okwuonu was to appear in Regina Provincial Court on Thursday. He’s representing himself.
Crown counsel Aaron Fritzler told the court he has had some contact with Okwuonu. They discussed the trial date and a possible adjournment, but Fritzler said he told Okwuono he was still expected in court.
In October, Regina police issued a media release saying they got a call Oct. 4 about a threatening email that was received by a number of people.
“The e-mail allegedly contained non-specific threats to the lives and safety of government officials and law enforcement, but also mentioned two Saskatchewan individuals by name,” the police release said.
Police later clarified that Moe was one of the subjects of the threats. Moe’s office confirmed the other person threatened was Dr. Saqib Shahab.
Police said the message was sent from a fake account. After investigating, police executed a search warrant on a home in south Regina on Friday and identified a potential suspect, who was later arrested.
