The Queen City Ex kicked off with more thrill-seeking activities on the second day but this time many attendants didn’t have to get on one of the rides to feel an adrenaline rush.
The Skate Pros trick team executed wild tricks on an 11-foot ramp Thursday afternoon in the Extreme Zone.
The three pro skateboarders who showcased their skills come from Brazil, Northern California and Cuba.
Erick Soto, announcer and manager for the team, said it’s like nothing audiences have never seen.
“Expect the unexpected,” said Soto. “There’s a big difference between watching the show on TV or seeing photos in magazines. When you come and see this in person its definitely a different experience.”
Kickflips and handstands were just some of the stunts executed by the team.
With the number of impressive tricks in the show there will always be some nasty wipe-outs.
“Well, it is an extreme sport and, by nature, we are going to fall,” said Soto.
The skateboarders are strapped with protection the audience can see like knee pads, elbow pads and a helmet, but they also have padding underneath their clothes.
“There’s a lot of escape routes that you find out through the years,” said Soto. “So its relatively safe, but from time to time, accidents do happen.”
Bryson Farrill, a pro-skateboarder with the show, said he’s had his share of gruesome falls.
“I’ve broken my hand, I’ve broken my foot,” said Farrill. “I’ve had a lot of nasty spills, I’ve hit my head a bunch, I’ve cut my head a bunch.”
On top of all of his injuries, the 21-year-old from San Francisco said he’s broken his leg in two places — it still hasn’t stopped him from competing.
“I do contests, as many as I can, and as many as I want to do all over the world but mostly in the states,” said Farrill.
When he’s not in competition, Farrill said performing in shows and travelling is nice. Plus, it’s the entire team’s first time in Canada.
Soto said they have a lot of fan interactions.
“A lot of the reactions from fans that we get especially from the parents, especially from the fathers is when they go ‘I used to skate man and its so cool to see how it has evolved.’ ”
Farrill said he wouldn’t be hitting up any of the rides while at the exhibition because they make him sick — he’s going to stick to adrenaline-rushing stunts in the meantime.
