The incident that triggered an Amber Alert in Regina on Sunday has resulted in charges against a 36-year-old woman.
Kerry Lynn Keewatin of Regina is charged with abduction of a person under 16, kidnapping, and failure to comply with conditions of a release order. She was to make her first court appearance on Monday afternoon.
According to a release from the Regina Police Service, officers were dispatched Sunday at about 4:40 a.m., to the 1100 block of 13th Avenue. A woman had come to the house and wanted to leave with her two-year-old son.
“The suspect was on a condition not to have contact with the resident of the house,” the release said. “In addition, this female did not have legal custody of the child.
“The breach and the removal of the child from his home indicated possible criminal wrongdoing, on top of concern for the welfare of the child.”
The woman and child were seen at the General Hospital, but they left on foot when staff members became suspicious. Police searched other addresses associated with Keewatin, as well as shelters and other possible locations.
At 3:40 p.m., after further investigation, an Amber Alert was issued. At 5:36 p.m., Keewatin was arrested by police at a house in the 300 block of Rose Street and the child was found safe.
Police said the arrest was a result of information shared by a member of the public.
EDITOR’S NOTE: On Nov. 27, 2023, Keewatin was given an eight-month conditional sentence and 16 months probation on charges of abduction of a person under 16 and failure to comply with conditions of a release. The Crown stayed charges of kidnapping and abduction.
