There is no shortage of industries still trying to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, and that includes Saskatchewan’s hospitality sector.
But as we reach the final weeks of summer, Mother Nature did provide some assistance according to Jim Bence, president and CEO of Hospitality Saskatchewan.
“We just had a spectacular summer so far,” Bence said. “We’re just really appreciative of so many people staying in Saskatchewan and exploring all the different things we have to offer.”
But is the industry getting back to pre-pandemic levels?
“The short answer to that is no,” Bence said. “During the summer, there is that spike, but when you look at the totality of the year, or even the quarter? No, it’s still pretty tough sledding, and that’s across Canada when it comes to hotels.”
Some of the hotel sector’s struggles can be attributed to a lack of corporate conferences and trade shows, Bence noted, as those events are sometimes booked years in advance. Regina hosting the Grey Cup this year will provide a much-needed surge for the industry, Bence noted.
Another major hurdle is staffing.
“It still is the one aspect of our industry right now that is really slowing down our recovery,” Bence said.
Bence said many operators want to return to pre-pandemic service after being forced to close or offer limited amenities, but are struggling to find employees.
