The sister of Dawn Walker — the Saskatchewan woman accused of faking her own death and that of a seven-year-old boy before leaving the country using false documents — says she’s thrilled her sister will return to Canada this week.
Dawn Walker, who was arrested in Oregon after a lengthy search in Saskatoon, made a brief court appearance Tuesday in Oregon City where she waived a formal extradition proceeding and agreed to be turned over to Canadian authorities.
She was to be released to the custody of Canadian police Wednesday.
“This is the best news ever, really,” Kathy Walker told The Canadian Press. “It’s really emotional. I’m so happy.
“It truly is an answer to our prayers and hopes … I mean, the battle’s not over, but just to know she’s no longer sitting in a U.S. jail is wonderful news.”
While Dawn Walker was set to return to Canada on Wednesday, she’s still facing charges on both sides of the border.
In the U.S., she is accused of aggravated identity theft and possession of false identity documents. In Canada, she’ll need to answer charges of abduction as well as public mischief. Police have said further criminal charges are possible, depending on what the investigation uncovers.
Kathy Walker said her sister will be supported by many people during the proceedings.
“Not only does she have her family and friends supporting her, she also has a larger community of advocates and people who also share her story who are going to be there for her,” Kathy Walker said.
