The curtain is about to come down on an iconic movie theatre in Regina.
Tom Hutchinson, the president of Magic Lantern Theatres, confirmed the closure of Rainbow Cinemas Golden Mile in an email to 980 CJME.
The theatre’s lease ending and lower attendance were the two main factors in the decision to close, Hutchinson wrote.
According to Hutchinson, attendance has not bounced back since reopening, with 30 per cent fewer moviegoers compared to what the theatre was seeing pre-COVID-19.
Those factors indicated to the company that it should not attempt to stay open.
Many know the Rainbow Cinemas in Regina for its tasty popcorn, as well as cheap/unique movies and old-school feels. It was first opened in 1998 and Hutchinson noted the concept was very popular in larger North American centres at the time. He says in some cases, it was cheaper to go to the movies than Blockbuster at the time.
No exact date was given for when the theatre will shut its doors.
