Artists, athletes, politicians and public figures were among the first 70 recipients of the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal in Saskatchewan.
During a ceremony Tuesday in Regina, Lt.-Gov. Russ Mirasty presented the medals, which were created to celebrate the 70th anniversary year of Queen Elizabeth II taking the throne. A total of 7,000 medals will be handed out during the Platinum Jubilee year, which ends Feb. 5, 2023.
“This medal allows us to honour Her Majesty’s commitment to service and pay tribute to Saskatchewan citizens who have devoted their time and effort to serving others in Canada, Saskatchewan and their communities,” Mirasty said in a media release. “I look forward to participating in medal ceremonies across the province as we celebrate the Platinum Jubilee year.”
Ceremonies will be held throughout the province to celebrate the recipients.
The first group included Regina Mayor Sandra Masters, Regina Police Service Chief Evan Bray, Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations Chief Bobby Cameron, Dr. Saqib Shahab, Dr. Susan Shaw, and Saskatchewan Roughriders legend George Reed.
