Road closures are to start Thursday as preparations continue for the demolition of the old Winnipeg Street overpass.
On Thursday at 6 a.m., the eastbound Ring Road exit ramp onto Winnipeg Street will be closed for about 24 hours for paving of the new lanes. Eastbound Ring Road traffic wanting to get off on Winnipeg Street will be detoured to McDonald Street.
Between Friday at 9 p.m., and Monday 6 a.m., the demolition of the existing overpass will start. That means:
- Ring Road traffic in both directions will be detoured using the existing off-ramps and newly built on-ramps to Ring Road.
- Winnipeg Street will be closed over Ring Road. Drivers who want to use Winnipeg Street to get to businesses and activities will face detours and should plan ahead.
- Alternative routes to cross Ring Road include McDonald Street or Broad Street.
- Ninth Avenue North will be closed to through traffic at the railroad tracks as crews pave that section of road.
The new overpass is to open to traffic on Monday, with most of those restrictions lifted. But eastbound Ring Road traffic won’t be able to turn left onto northbound Winnipeg Street and will be detoured for the next four to six weeks while the new exit loop ramp is completed.
“The City will advise residents of changes to this schedule and future restrictions as work progresses,” a media release said.
