Saskatoon police will be investigating the death of accused killer Myles Sanderson.
Sanderson died in the custody of the RCMP on Wednesday afternoon. According to the RCMP, Sanderson went into “medical distress” shortly after his arrest. Paramedics nearby were called to assist Sanderson, but he was pronounced dead upon his arrival at a Saskatoon hospital.
Sanderson was the prime suspect in the stabbing deaths of 10 people on the James Smith Cree Nation and in the nearby community of Weldon. Also found dead was Sanderson’s brother and alleged accomplice, Damien Sanderson.
The manhunt for Sanderson stretched across the province and lasted four days before his arrest and death.
On Thursday, the Saskatoon Police Service confirmed its officers will be investigating the death, as law requires an outside agency to investigate any death in police custody.
Also assisting in the investigation will be the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team and two independent observers appointed by the provincial government, police said.
“This investigation is complex and there is no timeline for its anticipated completion,” the police service said in a statement. “Once completed, investigative findings will be forwarded to the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General.”
