Two people have been charged after an incident that sounds like something from a TV show.
In a media release Tuesday, the RCMP said officers from the Moosomin detachment got a call from Manitoba RCMP on Thursday just after midnight about a pickup truck towing a trailer that was heading west on the Trans-Canada Highway. The truck and trailer had been reported stolen in Ontario.
Officers from the Moosomin, Broadview and Indian Head detachments joined Manitoba Mounties on the case. According to the RCMP, the pickup pulled into a weigh scale east of Moosomin and almost hit an RCMP vehicle.
“Two individuals then exited the truck, approached a semi which had been parked at the weigh scale, threatened the adult male semi driver and got inside, driving the semi onto Highway 1,” the release said. “The adult male semi driver was then thrown from the semi, which continued driving on Highway 1.”
The semi driver was later taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The Mounties deployed a spike belt to stop the semi, but its trailer caught fire as the truck approached the spike belt. The RCMP said the semi swerved to avoid the spike belt and ended up in the centre median.
Police arrested a 31-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman, both of whom are from Ontario.
The man was charged with two counts each of robbery, assault with a weapon, and mischief over $5,000, and one count each of robbery, kidnapping without firearm, assault, operating a motor vehicle while being pursued by police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and uttering threats.
The woman is facing two charges each of robbery, assault with a weapon, and mischief over $5,000, and one charge each of robbery, kidnapping without firearm, and assault.
The suspects were to appear in court in Moosomin on Tuesday.
