A four-vehicle collision on Highway 16 near Marshall early Wednesday morning left one man dead and another person injured, the RCMP said.
According to police, the collision occurred while a controlled burn in the area was causing smoke to drift over the highway. An initial call at approximately 5:30 a.m. reported the smoke as a traffic hazard, the RCMP said, and the crash was reported shortly afterward.
The crash involved three semis and a pickup truck, police said. A 63-year-old man, the lone occupant of the half-ton, was declared dead on the scene by paramedics. Police said his family has been notified of the death, and an autopsy has been ordered.
One person who was inside a semi was taken to hospital for treatment, the RCMP said, but they have since been released.
The highway was closed for about 12 hours after the collision, the RCMP said, but was reopened Wednesday evening.
