The owner of a Regina pest control company says German cockroaches are besieging some homes in the Queen City.
Shawn Sherwood, the owner of Poulin’s Pest Control, said the situation right now is the worst he’s ever seen.
“There’s no let-up. In 37 years, I have never seen anything like this,” Sherwood said on Tuesday’s Greg Morgan Morning Show.
German cockroaches are tiny bugs that are able to latch onto various personal objects in order to get into homes.
If they get into a home, they can cause damage to walls, books, personal items and even food in the fridge.
Sherwood says it’s pretty clear if a homeowner has a problem with the cockroaches.
“If you see something scuttling across your counter very quickly, that could be a sign that you have an issue,” Sherwood said.
If a homeowner does have an issue, Sherwood says it’s important to get in touch with a pest control company right away.
“You’re not going to get rid of these by yourself,” Sherwood said. “It’s very hard.”
Normally, it takes a special spray to kill the bugs.
Mice are another pest that could pose a threat to a home. But Sherwood said it doesn’t seem that mice are or will be as bad as the German cockroaches.
“(Mice) are just about average this year. Every fall, people complain about them getting into (their houses) because they’re just getting ready for the winter,” he said. “Once the mouse gets in there, he’s going to be running around in his little territory and generating about 100 poops a day. He’ll also be looking for nesting material.”
That material can include cloths, paper towels and napkins.
Sherwood says there are ways to prevent mice from getting in.
“We recommend every fall that people go around the outside of their house and look for any holes that are bigger than your little finger,” Sherwood explained. “If it’s that size, a mouse can get in and we recommend you use some kind of metal like steel wool or copper mesh and close those up.”
Mousetraps are another way to help prevent mice from getting into a home.
