Students at four Regina schools are getting some help from the city to safely get to class.
The City of Regina announced Thursday it’s installing a new style of school zone sign in three areas as part of a pilot project. The new signs are going up on Third Avenue (near Kitchener School), College Avenue (near Arcola Community School) and Chuka Boulevard (near Ecole Wascana Plains School and Ecole St. Elizabeth School).
“The initial locations were selected for the pilot project based on several factors, including where drivers frequently exceed the speed limit,” the city said in a media release.
According to the city, the new signs feature solar-powered LED flashing lights to remind drivers about the school zone and the possible presence of pedestrians. The lights are to come on between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
The city expects the signs to be installed by the end of November, weather permitting.
“After the pilot program, speed studies and on-site observations will be used to evaluate and assess performance of the signs,” the city said. “The pilot is expected to wrap up in 2024.”
