A career fair in Saskatoon on Wednesday will offer opportunities to Ukrainian refugees in Saskatchewan.
The fair, hosted by the Government of Saskatchewan, will be held from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Prairieland Park’s Hall E. It’s open to the approximately 3,000 Ukrainian refugees who have arrived in the province since the Russian invasion in February, as well as any other newcomers to Saskatchewan.
Recently, the province welcomed about 200 more displaced Ukrainians on the fourth chartered flight to Saskatchewan from Poland since the conflict began. Saskatchewan is a popular destination for Ukrainians for a number of reasons, including the suite of opportunities available and the large number of Ukrainians already living here.
The fair on Wednesday will feature about 100 employers, agencies and chambers of commerce from around the province, with representation from a number of different industries including agriculture, construction, health, hospitality, manufacturing, mining, retail, technology and transportation.
Jeremy Harrison, Saskatchewan’s minister of immigration and career training, said the labour market is hungry for good workers, and the career fair will help newcomers find those opportunities.
“Finding employment is an important step for all newcomers to the province as they look to grow in and with our communities,” Harrison said in a statement.
“As the nation faces labour market challenges, employers are searching for quality, reliable candidates to fill these positions.”
In addition, all Ukrainians arriving as temporary residents under the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel will be eligible for the Canada-Saskatchewan Job Grant and Re-Skill Saskatchewan Training Subsidy programs, the provincial government said, as long as they have a valid work permit.
More information on those programs can be found on the provincial government’s website.
