The busiest shopping season of the year is almost upon us, but while most of us will be looking for gifts, other “shoppers” may be taking a look at your vehicle.
According to Regina police, “car shopping” auto thieves often take advantage of the cold weather by looking for vehicles left unattended to warm up, often with the keys inside. So far in November, police in Regina have responded to 71 reports of stolen vehicles, and in 33 of those cases, the keys were left in the ignition.
“There are some common-sense practices that can greatly reduce incidents of auto theft,” Regina police said in a statement.
“A few minutes of crime prevention can save hours of frustration and grief over the loss of your vehicle, not to mention the costs of repairs or replacement.”
The police reminded drivers to always lock their vehicle and take the keys with them, even if the vehicle is parked in a garage or driveway.
“Don’t leave the car running to dash into a store, even for a few minutes,” police added. “Someone will see that as an invitation to drive away in your vehicle.”
While warming up a vehicle is often necessary in the cold, police said the safest way to do so is with a remote starter. If that’s not an option, police advised staying with the car while it’s warming up or locking the vehicle with a spare key or using a steering wheel lock.
It’s also important to report any suspicious activity, police said, such as people trying door handles in parking lots or on streets.
