A call about a man breaching his probation ended in a Mountie firing their gun after the man allegedly grabbed his gun when RCMP officers arrived at his house.
No one was hurt during the incident Wednesday in Alameda, about 40 minutes east of Estevan.
According to a release from the RCMP, officers from the Carnduff detachment got a call about a man breaching conditions of his probation.
Police said officers went to the 67-year-old man’s house and, after he answered the door, they told him he was under arrest.
“The male did not comply and went into the house and retrieved a firearm,” the Mounties said in a media release Friday. “An altercation occurred, which included the discharge of a firearm by the responding police officers.”
Police eventually got the man into custody. He’s now charged with two counts of attempted murder of a police officer and four counts of failing to comply with a probation order.
The RCMP didn’t provide any other details.
He was to appear in Regina Provincial Court on Friday.
EDITOR’S NOTE: The man was sentenced to 1,716 days in prison June 19, 2023 after being found guilty of a number of firearms offences, uttering threats toward a postman and obstructing a police officer. A charge of pointing a gun at a police officer was stayed.
