Instead of their typical green and white, four Huskies hockey players will be pulling on red and white when they return from the holidays.
Camryn Drever and Isabella Pozzi from the women’s team will join Jared Dmytriw and Roddy Ross from the men’s team as they represent Canada in the 2023 International University Sports Federation’s World University Games in Lake Placid, N.Y.
Drever has been a stable netminder for the Huskies this season, posting a .938 save percentage and a 1.56 goals-against average, along with six wins in her fourth year.
She said in a statement that the tournament was “something that I have had my eyes set on since I started my career as a Huskie and am thrilled to have the opportunity to represent Canada.”
Pozzi has been a solid defender on the Huskies’ blueline. Racking up 21 career points over her four seasons, she was named a U Sports all-star at last year’s national championship.
Jenna MacLean, a product of Wilcox who plays for the New Brunswick Varsity Reds, also was named to the women’s team.
Team Canada’s men’s team will be hoping to get some scoring out of Dmytriw, who sits third in Canada West with 12 goals, and fifth overall in points with 25.
This opportunity is something Dmytriw has been looking forward to, after he was named to last year’s team. That tournament was set to be played in Switzerland, but was eventually cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ross will be the second Huskie goalie heading to Lake Placid. The second-year goaltender has a .901 save percentage, a 2.85 goals-against average, and six wins.
The players won’t be the only ones representing the Huskies at the games, as equipment manager Cord Ivanco has also been named to Team Canada’s staff. Ivanco was originally selected for the Switzerland Games as well.
The World University Games run from Jan. 12-22.
