Two men have died of suspected fentanyl overdoses in Swift Current in the past four days, prompting a warning about illicit drugs from the RCMP.
According to the Swift Current Mounties, a 30-year-old man died on Thursday and a 27-year-old man died on Saturday.
“The two men did not consume the same substances,” the RCMP said in a media release. “One substance is a green powder; the other substance consists of clear or white crystals. The two substances did not look like regular fentanyl and may not have been sold as fentanyl. However, police field tests of both substances detected the presence of fentanyl.
“Swift Current RCMP is urging the public who consumes illicit drugs to take special precautions when using.”
Those precautions include never using alone, letting someone know of your plans to use, carrying a Naloxone kit, and calling 911 if an overdose is occurring.
Anyone with information about the overdoses or the substances involved is asked to call the Swift Current RCMP at 306-778-4870 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
