A man employed at the Holy Family Roman Catholic Separate School Division in the Weyburn area is being charged with sexually assaulting a teenage girl.
According to Weyburn police, parents went to police on Wednesday last week when they found inappropriate communications between their daughter and an adult over social media. The next day, the man was arrested.
Police aren’t releasing the man’s name yet as he hasn’t made his first court appearance on the charges. They also wouldn’t release for which school division the man worked, saying police are still talking with the division.
The police also wouldn’t release the name of the school division the man worked for, but Holy Family confirmed he’s an employee. Director of Education Gwen Keith wouldn’t say where the man worked, his role as an employee, or whether any action like suspension or termination of employment was undertaken in the wake of the charges, calling the matter a personnel issue.
Keith said the division is taking the matter very seriously and is following proper protocols. The schools are safe, Keith added.
The man was charged with sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching and sexual assault. The investigation is still happening, and further charges could be laid.
He was released from police custody with several conditions and is to make his first appearance in Weyburn court at the end of February.
The Weyburn police are asking parents to ensure their children’s social media communications are appropriate.
EDITOR’S NOTE: The man was sentenced to six months in jail for sexual purpose followed by 24 months probation. He also received a DNA order and is required to be on the sex offender registry for 10 years.
