A 15-year-old girl has been charged after bear spray was discharged during a round dance in Regina on Wednesday evening.
According to police, officers responded at about 9:20 p.m. to a community centre in the 1000 block of Angus Street for a report that someone had deployed bear spray in the lobby of the building. Police said many people, including children and Elders, were affected by the spray.
“Officers found dozens of people outside the building, coughing, gagging and crying because of exposure to bear spray,” a police media release said.
As paramedics treated the victims, police officers watched the building’s security video. The video, police said, showed an altercation between a number of people, with one of them discharging bear spray into the crowd before leaving.
Police were able to identify the suspect, who was subsequently arrested and charged.
The girl, who can’t be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was charged with assault with a weapon. She made her first court appearance Thursday.
