A student at a north Regina high school is facing real charges after bringing a fake gun to school.
Police said they began their investigation into the incident on Monday around 9:30 a.m., after a school administrator approached a school resource officer that a student might have a gun at the high school located on Argyle Street North.
Together they found the possible weapon in the 16-year-old student’s possession.
In a media release, police said the officer could not tell the weapon was fake until he checked it for ammunition and realized it was a CO2 pistol.
It was seized and the student was charged with possession of a weapon for a purpose dangerous to public peace.
The student can’t be named in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
They are scheduled to make a court date on March 7.
“We cannot emphasize this enough: Don’t carry an imitation firearm,” police said in a media release. “These items are made to look exactly like real firearms and they will elicit a real reaction from others.
“If a police officer is faced with someone pointing a firearm, the officer can only respond in one way: Stop the threat. There is no opportunity to debate whether or not the gun is real. The resulting action (or hesitation) could end a life.”
