A police dog helped officers track down and arrest a suspected carjacker in Regina early Thursday morning.
According to police, the victim was sitting in his parked vehicle on Grey Street in the early hours of the morning when two men got out of a nearby vehicle, got into his vehicle, and pointed a gun at him.
One of them drove away in the victim’s vehicle, police said, while the other suspect drove off in the vehicle they’d been sitting in previously.
The victim wasn’t hurt during the robbery, police noted.
The stolen vehicle was soon found abandoned on Grey Street, police said, and a loaded gun was found inside.
Meanwhile, other officers spotted the suspects’ vehicle and tried to perform a traffic stop, but the driver took off. That vehicle was soon also found abandoned in an alley on Broder Street.
A police dog team found one of the suspects hiding in a yard on Edgar Street. He was bitten by the dog, police said, and was taken to hospital by paramedics for treatment.
“During the course of the investigation, police recovered a second firearm, a quantity of drugs, items associated with drug trafficking and body armour,” police said in a statement.
The suspect, a 28-year-old Regina man, is now facing a lengthy list of charges, including armed robbery, pointing a firearm, and fleeing police. He was scheduled to make a court appearance Thursday afternoon.
