Regina city council voted unanimously Wednesday in favour of submitting an application for federal funding to build a new aquatics centre, with the other catalyst projects being discussed at city council March 22.
Mayor Sandra Masters told the Greg Morgan Morning Show on Thursday the long-anticipated online survey on the new multi-purpose event centre would be available on Be Heard Regina. The survey is to go live Thursday at 5 p.m.
“You’ll probably see us blast it on our (social media) pages. The Downtown BID will push it out. The Chamber (of Commerce) will push it out. Everybody will push it out trying to get as many folks as possible to fill it out,” the mayor said.
“We are also undertaking a … privately done survey to make sure we’ve got folks from every ward in the city who are responding to the survey.”
Masters said the private survey will be done by phone, so she encouraged people to answer their phones.
She also said the online survey will have seven questions focusing on whether people agree with the catalyst committee’s decision to rank the event centre as the fourth-most important catalyst project, whether parking and transit could be an issue, and their thoughts it being located downtown.
“But (we’ll) also (be) asking folks, ‘Other than work, how often do you come downtown?’ ” she added.
According to the mayor, the survey results will be published by the next city council meeting.
“They won’t be in the written report because I think they’ll be scrambling to get them presented for March 22 … but the idea is that we will cumulate however many responses we’ve got and present them to council,” Masters added.
As for what will happen to the Lawson Aquatic Centre, the mayor said it will remain open until the new one is built.
“It’s got about .. five to seven (years of) life left in it before we have to dump millions into it,” Masters said. “Part of the deal with the green municipal infrastructure funding is that we have to close the old pool (within five years of opening the new pool) because it’s not energy efficient.”
