People in Regina will soon be able to zip around the city on an e-scooter.
In a news release, the City of Regina said city council approved a traffic bylaw amendment that will allow for a shared e-scooter program in the Queen City beginning this summer.
The city’s executive committee previously had approved the program.
“E-scooters are a fun, sustainable activity to get around our city and provide an alternate mode of transportation,” it said.
Mayor Sandra Masters told reporters after Wednesday’s city council meeting that people will not be allowed to ride the scooters on sidewalks.
“They are allowed on multi-use pathways and roads with 50-kilometre-per-hour or less speed limits,” she said. “(The speed limit being applied to all e-scooters) is 24 kilometres per hour … so that (will) keep them off 70-kilometre-per-hour roads.”
In addition, the scooters will be allowed on bike lanes and park pathways.
Masters added that since other Canadian cities allow e-scooters, there are examples of best practices.
“Then we’ll need to figure out how it applies here and how folks use them here. Every city is somewhat similar and somewhat different,” she said.
Information on where the scooters can be rented, the cost and where they can be ridden will be communicated once the program launches, tentatively in July, the release said.
City council also directed administration to begin the process of allowing the use of personal e-scooters. Council is expected to discuss the topic at its meeting April 26.
