Regina Fire and Protective Services is warning people about being on thin ice.
In a media release Friday, the fire department reminded people to stay off all bodies of water in the city – including Wascana Lake, creeks, storm channels and detention ponds – now that warmer temperatures have arrived.
Parents were urged to talk to their children about staying off the ice.
“Residents should not walk, ski, skate, bike or play on any body of water,” the release said. “If you see anyone, particularly children, close to thin ice, call Regina Police Service at 306-777-6500.”
People also were told to keep their pets leashed when they’re close to bodies of water. The release reminded people that if a pet goes through the ice, the owner shouldn’t try to rescue the pet because they’ll be putting themselves and others at risk.
The release said residents should call 911 in emergencies involving people or pets.
