CAA Saskatchewan was tracking infractions Tuesday at two schools in White City.
During a CAA School Zone Safety Assessment, observers kept track of what CAA called “risky behaviours” in the school zones at Ecole White City School and Emerald Ridge School.
The total number of infractions by drivers, pedestrians and cyclists over two hours at Emerald Ridge School was 276, eight more than were seen at Ecole White City School in the same time frame.
According to CAA, Town of White City employees, White City’s fire chief, RCMP officers, local volunteers and CAA Saskatchewan staff worked in teams to track the infractions. They worked in one-hour periods before school (8 a.m. to 9 a.m.) and after classes were out (from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.).
Outside Emerald Ridge School, cyclists were the biggest culprits, with 156 infractions. Those included not wearing a helmet (91), not dismounting to cross a street (22) and not signalling their intentions (18).
Drivers committed 80 infractions (including 30 incidents of not stopping at a stop sign and 12 of speeding), while observers saw pedestrians do 40 things wrong (including 27 occurrences of jaywalking).
Things were much different at Ecole White City School.
Drivers committed 191 infractions, including 48 instances of speeding through the school zone, 46 of failing to use their turn signal and 25 of failing to stop at a stop sign.
Kids on bikes had 63 incidents of risky behaviour (44 of which were for not wearing a helmet) and pedestrians had 14 such incidents (with 12 jaywalkers).
According to CAA, the results of its assessments “are collected and given to the school community to share with staff, students, families, community partners, and decision makers regarding steps required to improve the safety in their school zones.”
The organization reminded drivers to observe all traffic laws, pay attention to signage and avoid distracted driving. Pedestrians were urged to cross streets at crosswalks or marked intersections, and cyclists were encouraged to wear a helmet and follow the rules of the road.
