SaskPower is set to begin upgrading the electrical grid in Regina’s downtown core.
According to the Crown utility, the $9-million investment involves replacing and removing aging equipment, including underground cables and duct banks.
The work may involve traffic disruptions and planned outages, but SaskPower said it will work to keep interruptions to a minimum and provide notice in advance.
The work is already underway, the utility company said, and will continue until December.
“Our construction work in downtown Regina will not only improve reliability, but will upgrade and modernize our infrastructure, which will make finding and repairing outages much faster in the future,” Kory Hayko, SaskPower’s chief operating officer, said in a statement.
“Some of our work will require replacing or removing buried power lines, and to minimize impacts to residents, we’re collaborating with the City of Regina and other utilities to streamline work.”
SaskPower said it has invested $44 million into improving its systems in Regina’s core, which has led to a 15 per cent decrease in unplanned outages in the city’s downtown.
Over the 2023-24 fiscal year, SaskPower plans to spend $1.15 billion on capital projects, a $98-million increase over 2022-23.
