People in western Saskatchewan should keep an eye on the sky Monday.
Environment Canada issued tornado watches for areas around the Battlefords, Big River, Biggar, Green Lake, Kindersley, Maidstone, Meadow Lake, Rosetown, St. Walburg and Unity shortly before noon Monday.
Some areas also were under severe thunderstorm warnings, while others were under severe thunderstorm watches. A list of the advisories appears here.
Tornado watches mean conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms which could produce tornadoes, strong winds, large hail and heavy rain, the weather service explained.
“In the event of a tornado, or if a tornado warning is issued for your area, it is recommended you take the following actions: Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet,” Environment Canada said in a statement.
“Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can. As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris.”
Tornadoes have already touched down in Saskatchewan this season, including one twister which caused significant damage to a farmyard in the Regina area in late May.
Heat warnings remained in place across regions of the province Monday after initially being issued Sunday.
