Regina Public Schools has confirmed there was a small electrical fire at Ecole Wascana Plains School on Friday.
According to division spokesperson Terry Lazarou, the fire is out, but students are being sent home because the school’s power is out.
Lazarou added no one was hurt.
“This morning, Ecole Wascana Plains experienced an electrical issue which resulted in a very small fire,” Lazarou said. “That small fire impacted the electrical system.”
Firefighters were on the scene quickly, Lazarou added, but power remains off and the cause of the fire must be investigated.
“We made the decision to close the school for the day so that we can safely investigate the issue and work on returning power to the school,” he said.
Lazarou said families and caregivers are being contacted before students are sent home. He said students were waiting outside on the playground under supervision by staff.
“Our hope is that the school will reopen on Monday, June 12 as normal, but we don’t know that yet for sure,” he said.
“It depends on the investigation of the damage, and if we need to do anything more extensive we will inform parents via communication through the website and through Edsby over the weekend about what to expect for Monday.”
