If people are in search for a furry companion, they can head over to Regina Humane Society — which is hosting the final day of a 3 day zero fee dog adoption event.
The shelter has an overabundance of man’s best friend which is the reason its hosting the event according to the RHS’s Bill Thorn.
“To be honest, it’s an event I wish we weren’t having because we’ve got a real problem with the number of dogs that have been coming into the shelter this year — more than I’ve seen in my eight plus years at the Humane Society,” he said.
Thorn said the high volume of dogs is a problem that many shelters across Canada are having.
“I think it’s a result of a few things; people heading back to work (who adopted) animals during the pandemic and find they don’t have the time for them. Couple that with things (being) expensive right now, the economic situation can be challenging and expenses are high for people and that includes looking after their pets and veterinary care and that kind of thing,” Thorn said.
“We’re seeing a higher number of people that are not able to keep their pets.”
According to a news release all RHS adoptions will include “spay/neuter surgery, vaccination, tattoo, microchip and a post adoption veterinary exam.”
Thorn said that RHS only has so many kennels for dogs and that they don’t have enough space in the adoption area to keep them.
“We’ve got lots of different sizes and colours — you name it,” Thorn said. “We’ve got a wide variety of dogs right now too. So we’re confident that you’ll be able to find your new forever friend this weekend.”
