A 16-year-old boy has been handed a sentence of nearly six years after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in Regina’s sixth homicide of 2022.
On June 29 of last year, police were called to an alley on Rae Street, where they found a 14-year-old boy who had been shot to death. They also found an injured 32-year-old woman who was taken to hospital by paramedics.
After an investigation by the Regina Police Service’s Major Crimes Unit, police arrested a then-15-year-old boy. He initially was charged with first-degree murder, assault with a weapon and discharging a firearm recklessly.
Two other teens also were charged in connection with the drive-by shooting, but the charges against them were stayed.
In addition to the murder charge, the boy also pleaded guilty in Regina Provincial Court to the count of recklessly discharging a firearm.
According to court documents, the teen was ordered to serve 1,600 days in secured custody followed by 800 days of community supervision. He also was handed a 25-year firearms prohibition.
The boy can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
