Despite the construction that has caused headaches for many, the City of Regina is reminding residents that the downtown core remains open for business with a lot to offer.
The city recently started a four-year revitalization project on 11th Avenue, and found itself defending overlapping construction projects after residents found multiple downtown access points blocked off by roadworks and other projects.
Mayor Sandra Masters acknowledged the issues it’s causing for drivers after construction delayed her arrival for an on-air interview at 980 CJME.
“We are working closely with businesses and organizations to make Downtown a great place to be this summer,” Niki Anderson, Regina’s city manager, said in a statement.
“We recognize revitalization comes with some construction ‘growing pains’ and we want to remind Regina residents that Downtown is open for business — with lots to offer!”
The city called attention to some of the offerings in the downtown area, including the Regina Farmer’s Market, the upcoming Regina Folk Festival (Aug. 11-13 in Victoria Park), and the array of public art on display, including the Regina Downtown Business Improvement District’s (RDBID) “Urban Canvas Project.”
RDBID executive director Judith Veresuk called attention to the culinary and retail options available in the neighbourhood.
“Downtown is the perfect destination to spend your summer and we invite everyone to spend time at our various shopping destinations and grab a bite to eat,” Veresuk said in a statement.
“We are also hosting a variety of summer activities for the whole family to enjoy. Throughout the summer season, Downtown is the place to be – it’s where it’s at!”
The summer calendar of downtown events can be found on the RDBID’s website.
