A 26-year-old Regina man found himself in handcuffs Thursday after allegedly driving while impaired, running from police, hitting a guardrail, throwing things at traffic and assaulting an officer.
According to police, the story started when a member of the public called police around noon to report an impaired driver on 28th Avenue.
Police said officers caught up with the driver in the Harbour Landing neighbourhood, but the man took off, driving at high speeds. Police said the driver reportedly struck a guardrail near the Assiniboine Avenue exit, which brought the chase to an end.
But the story didn’t end there.
“The male driver exited the vehicle, walked out into traffic and threw objects at multiple vehicles,” police said in a statement.
“A motorist who witnessed the collision exited their vehicle to assist the male, however, the suspect male assaulted this individual. When police attended, officers located the suspect male in the ditch swinging a metal pipe, which he threw at an officer who was inside a Patrol vehicle.”
Despite the man allegedly resisting arrest, police said he was eventually taken into custody. The vehicle he was driving was later determined to be stolen, police added.
The 26-year-old Regina man is now facing a list of charges, including impaired driving, dangerous driving, assault, resisting arrest, assaulting a peace officer causing bodily harm, and possession of stolen property.
He made his first court appearance Friday, police said.
