An email scam is making the rounds in Saskatchewan, with recipients being told they’re being investigated for sexual offences.
The Regina Police Service issued a warning about the scam Thursday, including a copy of the letter being sent via email.
The letter claims to come from a representative of the Saskatchewan Police Commission and features logos of several of the province’s municipal police agencies along with the title “Summons to Appear.”
The sender’s email address is shown as cybercrime.police.gouv@gmail.com.
“The sender informs the recipient they are the subject of legal proceedings related to sexual offences, including offences involving minors,” the police service said. “The email asks the recipient to respond to the email and notes that the recipient will be arrested by local police.”
Police said their Cyber Crime Unit is investigating the scam, and reminded people not to open emails from unknown senders, to double-check the sender’s email address, and to contact police if they feel they’re the victim of a scam.
