Tony Bennett, one of the most beloved and recognizable voices in music, died Friday morning at the age of 96.
Best known for his signature 1962 hit “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” Bennett’s professional career spanned eight decades and included 18 Grammy Awards and a No. 1 album at age 85.
Bennett was praised often by fellow performers, but never more meaningfully than when Frank Sinatra said in a 1965 Life magazine interview: “For my money, Tony Bennett is the best singer in the business.”
Bennett was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2016, but had continued to perform and record through 2021.
