The City of Regina is employing the GOAT of weedeating.
The city announced Tuesday that goats are to be munching away on weeds in the storm channel between Pasqua Street and 25th Avenue. The animals have been deployed in other areas to manage weeds, including in Wascana Centre.
“The City of Regina is pleased to pilot this innovative, chemical-free solution to noxious weeds,” Janet Aird, the city’s acting director of waste, water and environment, said in a media release. “While this is new to us as an organization, it won’t be new to residents, who may have seen goats helping manage weeds at Wascana Park.”
No Kidding Weed Management will be using its goats to help manage leafy spurge. The city says that plant is harmful to other animals, but it’s one that goats “can safely and happily eat.”
The city said the goats will be in a temporary fenced-in area and will be accompanied by a skilled handler and trained dogs during the duration of the project.
