Two people are facing charges after an incident that ended with their vehicle stuck in a Saskatchewan field as they tried to elude police.
The RCMP said the incident began Saturday at around 10:40 a.m., when officers from the White Butte RCMP got a call about a robbery at a rural property in Avonhurst.
Police were told a man and a woman had broken into a garage on the property. They then allegedly used a gun to threaten a woman and assaulted her. Police say the suspects then stole a vehicle and took off.
According to the Mounties, the victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The RCMP started to search for the suspects, with officers from the White Butte, Lumsden, Fort Qu’Appelle and Southey detachments and from the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Police Dog Services taking part.
Police said the officers found the vehicle on Highway 210 and tried to pull it over, but the driver didn’t stop and sped onto Highway 10.
“The suspects entered a field and officers were able to disable the vehicle and arrest the male and female occupants,” police said in a release.
Police said another vehicle, which had been reported stolen in Regina, was found abandoned near the property where the robbery occurred.
During a search of the vehicles, officers found a gun, an air rifle, and banking and ID cards.
A 22-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man are facing a number of charges, including using a firearm during an indictable offence, aggravated assault, break, enter and commit an indictable offence, theft of a motor vehicle, and theft under $5,000.
The suspects appeared in Regina Provincial Court on Tuesday.
The Mounties said the investigation is continuing, so anyone with information about the incident is asked to call their local police service, the RCMP at 310-RCMP, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
