A Regina man who was wanted on a sexual assault charge is now also facing gun charges and recovering from a dog bite.
According to police, an investigation led officers to believe a man wanted for sexual assault was at a home on Fourth Avenue, and had guns with him. That led to a raid by the Regina Police Service’s SWAT team, canine unit and street gang unit Wednesday evening.
“The suspect attempted to flee the residence but was apprehended by members of the Canine Unit,” police said in a statement.
“During the course of the arrest, the suspect was bitten by the Police Service Dog. He was taken to hospital by EMS for treatment of minor injuries as a result.”
A search of the home turned up what police called an assault rifle and a semi-automatic firearm, along with ammunition and magazines for both guns.
Police said the 38-year-old man is now charged with sexual assault along with numerous gun charges. The new charges include careless storage of a firearm and possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order.
He was to appear in Regina Provincial Court on Thursday to answer the charges.
