There will be some parking changes at Regina General Hospital as the site gets ready for construction.
Site preparation for the new parkade is scheduled to begin on October 10 with the installation of fencing around the construction site. The fencing will encompass a large area of the northwestern portion of the parking lot, resulting in the relocation of 315 patient, visitor, and staff parking stalls.
The new parkade comes after years of complaints by hospital staff about the parking situation at the facility. The news of planning a parkade was applauded by many who work at the facility or are there visiting patients.
Patient and visitor parking have been prioritized and will continue to be located adjacent to the site. Patients and visitors will be able to access the hospital at the 14th Avenue entrance, with parking stalls available just east of the current patient and visitor parking lot.
As preparations for construction begin, there will no longer be parking gates or a booth. Due to this change, the hospital will implement a Pay by Plate parking system. The system will work by having customers park and then pre-purchase blocks of time by registering their vehicles license plate number at a pay station within the hospital or by using the ParkMobile app which can be downloaded through the app store or by scanning the QR code located on signage in the parking lot. Patient and visitor parking rates are not expected to be affected by any of these changes.
Staff affected by the new construction will be prioritized for on-site parking with the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA)’s staff Park & Ride program being expanded for the remaining employees affected.
The new parkade will increase on-site parking upon its completion. It should about a year and a half to complete once construction begins.
