Regina’s fire department is urging people to stay off the ice on all bodies of water in the city.
In a media release Thursday, Regina Fire and Protective Services said the ice on Wascana Lake, Wascana Creek, storm channels and retention ponds wasn’t safe.
“Changes in air temperatures mean the thickness of the ice can change quickly and without warning,” the release said. “Recreational activities such as walking, skiing, skating, or playing on any body of water are strongly discouraged. Ice that looks safe may not be.”
The fire department said dogs should be on leashes when people are walking near bodies of water. If a pet goes through the ice, people were reminded not to attempt a rescue as they’ll be putting themselves and others at risk.
People who see anyone — particularly children — near thin ice should call the Regina Police Service at 306-777-6500 or, in an emergency, 9-1-1.
