‘Tis the season for parcel deliveries, and porch pirates are looking to capitalize on the busy season.
The term “porch pirates” refers to thieves who swipe parcels and other deliveries from doorsteps. A number of incidents have been reported recently, and the Saskatchewan RCMP shared some tips to help keep deliveries safe from piracy during this holiday season.
“During the month of December, online shopping increases, and so do the number of parcels that are left unattended on residents’ doorsteps,” the Saskatchewan RCMP said in a statement. “This creates easy opportunity for thieves.”
The Mounties advised scheduling deliveries for a time when you know you’ll be home, using a pickup location, or having parcels delivered to a workplace or the home of a trusted friend or neighbour.
Police also recommended requesting a signature for deliveries or asking that the parcel be left out of sight.
“Consider installing exterior security cameras to monitor your doorstep remotely and capture any suspicious activity,” the RCMP added.
The Mounties asked the public to report any suspicious activity to local police.
“When all crimes are reported to the police, police officers get a clearer picture of the types and numbers of crimes occurring in their area,” the Mounties said. “This information helps them launch future police projects, initiatives and education campaigns within the area and the division.”
The RCMP also noted that many crimes can be reported online.
