With the snow finally falling in Regina, residents are being reminded to clear it from their sidewalks — or else they could pay for it.
According to the City of Regina’s snow-clearing regulations, most property owners in the city are required to clear their sidewalks within 48 hours of a snow or ice event. Properties in the downtown must remove the snow and ice within 24 hours.
In a release Tuesday, the city said staff who see a violation will issue a notice of non-compliance to the property owner, requiring them to clear the sidewalk within a specified timeframe.
“If the sidewalk remains uncleared, the City will perform the work and the costs will be applied to the property owner’s taxes,” the release said.
The city said snow and ice must be shovelled to the edges of the sidewalk, as close as possible to the concrete to create an even surface. If the sidewalk is icy, residents can visit city-owned sandboxes around town to get free sand/salt mix to provide traction.
More information about the bylaw and sandbox locations is available here.
The snow-clearing regulations came into effect on Jan. 1, 2022.
