As the mercury plummets in Saskatchewan, Regina Transit is once again making a warming bus available to people experiencing homelessness.
The bus is to be located in front of Carmichael Outreach in the 1500 block of 12th Avenue, near St. John Street. The service is to begin Wednesday night and will be available from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. seven nights a week.
According to a media release from the city, a bus operator and a security person will be on board the vehicle each night. The bus will also have communications equipment in case emergency services are required.
“The warming bus provides urgently needed alternative shelter to people who currently sleep outdoors and will enhance the safety and well-being of residents during cold winter nights,” the city said in a media release.
The city expects the bus to be available to those who need it until Jan. 22, when a new warming space is slated to open at Carmicheal Outreach.
That space was made possible after the city provided $100,000 from its cold weather strategy budget and the provincial government put up a grant of $200,000 to Carmichael Outreach.
The charity is accepting donations to support the people who will be using the warming bus. Donations are to be made through Carmichael Outreach at 306-757-2235 or info@carmichaeloutreach.ca; they should not be taken to the bus to protect the people’s privacy.
“The City recognizes the need for a temporary emergency shelter this winter,” the release said. “We continue to collaborate with the provincial and federal governments, community organizations, and other stakeholders as we work toward solutions.”
