The Royal Saskatchewan Museum is sending Megamunch into retirement with a bash.
The half-sized robotic Tyrannosaurus rex is to be feted Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the museum, which is located at the corner of Albert Street and College Avenue.
“Megamunch has been a visitor favourite at the museum for 37 years and will be dearly missed,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Laura Ross said in a media release.
“It is wonderful to see all the congratulatory messages that visitors have left for Megamunch. An amazing ambassador for the museum, Megamunch will be getting a well-deserved rest, and we wish him all the best in his retirement.”
Megamunch’s last day is set for Feb. 25. After that, the display will be taken to the museum’s warehouse for safekeeping and will be kept as part of the collection.
The festivities Saturday get underway with a short program at 1:15 p.m., followed by a concert by children’s performer Brenda Baker.
The concert is first-come, first-served and there are around 275 seats available in the auditorium. Seating opens at 12:45 p.m., and the museum says the concert is most appropriate for pre-school to Grade 2 students.
After the concert, dinosaur egg treats (doughnut holes) will be available.
From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., there will be a Megamunch Seek-and-Find activity in the galleries, a retirement slideshow is to be shown in the SaskTel Be Kind Online Learning Lab, and Megamunch will be greeting visitors who want to leave a note or take a picture.
For those who can’t attend Saturday’s events, the Megamunch pop-up museum will be in the Be Kind Online Learning Lab and the Seek-and-Find activity will be available during the week of Feb. 20-25.
