Some of the details are becoming more clear after the provincial government made a change to flag requirements at schools.
In the fall, included in the Parents’ Bill of Rights — which made the pronoun policy into law — was a clause that made it mandatory for schools in Saskatchewan, aside from schools on reserve, to fly the Saskatchewan flag as well as the previously required Canadian flag.
When asked at the time why this was important enough to warrant legislation given other things that might have been priorities for the government, Education Minister Jeremy Cockrill spoke about being proud of Saskatchewan and said that other provinces already had such requirements.
There were also questions at the time about the cost of the legislation.
Now it has come out that the Ministry of Education will be providing each school with two Saskatchewan flags. The cost is still being figured out.
The province will also allow the schools to fly the Saskatchewan flag underneath the Canadian flag when there’s only one flagpole at the school.
A statement from the Ministry of Education said that as construction of new schools continues, the government will pay for a second flagpole to be erected.
