You never know how much a random act of kindness can help.
A recent act of kindness started with a $5 bill left in a Grade 7 classroom in Warman, and quickly grew from there.
That classroom has a donation box for five-year-old Logan McCorkell, who has been diagnosed with a rare kidney disease.
“He was diagnosed on Christmas Eve, 2020, with a rare kidney disease called nephrotic syndrome,” explained Sarah McCorkell, Logan’s mom.
“He relapsed on the medication for that, so they had to do a biopsy.”
That biopsy revealed that Logan had an even rarer kidney disease called focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, which affects just seven people out of a million.
After a recent cheer competition in Warman, an anonymous competitor from Regina left a $5 bill in the box with a note that said “For Logan.”
McCorkell said the family was shocked when they learned that the call for donations had reached all the way to Regina

“Their preschool teacher sent me a picture of the $5 bill that the teacher of that classroom had sent her,” said McCorkell. “My immediate reaction was I started crying because I was so happy.”
After the $5 bill kicked things off, McCorkell said the coach of the Regina Rebels cheer team promised to match any additional donations made by parents. Since then, more than $2,000 has been donated.
McCorkell said it’s a wonderful reminder that there are still good people in this world.
“You don’t think that you’re going to have a sick child,” said McCorkell, who added that it’s very meaningful to have a group of strangers working to help you.
The money raised will go towards helping the family when Logan’s transplant happens, McCorkell explained.
“We are just waiting for a donor to come,” said McCorkell. “Then we’ll have to move to Edmonton for up to three months.”
The family is also collecting donations online through a GoFundMe page.
